10.30 – 13.00 The CE:ET’s Student Innovation Challenge

Year 10 students have been set green innovation challenges by local businesses (including Associated Waste Management, British Gas and Yorkshire Water) in partnership with the Centre of Excellence for Environmental Technologies (CE:ET).

Were they able to rise to the real challenges which businesses face? And did they pass their Key Stage 4 Assessment? Come along to meet George, Tyler and Brenda from Buttershaw Business and Enterprise College and find out!

These are the problems they worked on:

  • Geroge Mortimer: Can In build a scaled down model of Associated Waste Management’s (AWM) mixed waste optical sorter?
  • Tyler Bromley; Can I build a more efficient wind-turbine design?
  • Brenda Ayesigwa: Can I produce an educational resource for the Advanced Thermal Conversion (ATC) technology used by Yorkshire Water?

The CE:ET Project Director, Joe Ryan, and University of Bradford STEM Coordinator, James Machell will be on hand to support students and explain how their employer-led project works. Their ambitious plans for building our next generation of green leaders include rolling out their pilot program to new schools and working with students from year 9 to 12.

Could your businesses benefit from fresh ideas from young minds? Seeing how this project has worked so far might help you to decide.

13.30 – 14.30 The Great Recovery: Tear Down Session

Building on the popular Great Recovery workshop series, we will be exploring what is actually in our corporate clothing. How easy is it to repair, reuse and recycle, and how can we redesign it for circular systems? By getting hands-on and literally taking apart our everyday ‘stuff’, the workshop will enable all disciplines to learn from each other and ultimately to solve complex challenges through practical action. This is as much about service and business design as it is product disassembly.

This session compliments textile themed workshops within the Circular Economy, Materials and Recycling strand.
